Wilson averted his face and proceeded to straighten the towel on the roller. His action seemed to infuriate the woman. This time Paul was for some minutes in the berth. "You will return me," she said. "You are not in earnest. This is a bold and awful act of treachery attempted merely to test me. Marry you! Send me back to my father at once whilst my home is at hand, or you will discover that instead of having won a wife, you have driven a girl into a madhouse." Croaker, having grown lonely, had come down to meet him. She shivered. "And I'm very fond of them, only," she added as she followed him to the door, "I never know whether they want to eat me up or caress me." He glanced at her closely, struck by the odd note in her voice. "He seems a manly little chap," he said. "I must get to know him better.".
